Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley was mostly prune orchards and pastures when, in 1962, Maggie and Harry Wetzel purchased a large portion of a homestead built by Cyrus Alexander, the valley’s 19th century namesake. The Wetzels planted grapes and made some wine for friends and family. In 1975 they built a small winery and oldest son Hank Wetzel produced their first wine. The third generation is now active in the winery. The vineyard for this wine lies adjacent to the one owned by Silver Oak! The vintage changes, but here is Robert Parker's review of the 2013:92+ "Alexander Valley Vineyards has been making Cabernet Sauvignon for a long time, and the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is from 100% organically grown grapes. It has a saturated purple color and offers up big, juicy, rather classic Cabernet Sauvignon that is super-concentrated, with loads of chocolate, plum, blackberry, and cassis. Smoky earth as well as underbrush and forest floor are also present in this big back-strapping, super-rich wine. Is it the 2013 vintage or is this the new super-duper style Alexander Valley Vineyards is cultivating? There are 1,200 cases of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that should age brilliantly for at least 20-25 years. This winery consistently turns out some impressive values."
